Job Introduction

It’s an exciting time to be part of BBC News. We are expanding in North America, our biggest market outside the UK, and we are recruiting a senior journalist for video to play a critical role in bringing North American and global audiences to our website ( BBC.com/news ) and app.

The BBC is the most trusted news brand in the US. The right person for this role has significant experience as a video editor in daily news, and is able to work quickly and creatively to tight deadlines. They should have impeccable news judgment, informed by data.

The BBC’s North American digital operation covers US and Canadian news for domestic and global audiences. It is staffed 7 days a week, from 6am to 11pm ET. In this role, you will be expected to work shifts including some weekends, and will be based in our Washington DC office.

This is a local hire position and eligible candidates must be able to live and work in the US(US citizenship, Green Card or work authorisation).

Main Responsibilities

As a Video Senior Journalist, You Will

  • Assess, assign, edit and publish video for digital platforms in the 1min-3min range in length
  • Write succinct, accurate and effective headlines and summaries for video assets
  • Work in tandem with other journalists and other teams across the BBC to make the most of our journalism
  • Use data analytics to help understand performance and trends in audience consumption
  • Keep abreast of new skills and developments in video storytelling

What We Are Looking For

  • Excellent editorial judgement and a track-record of spotting opportunites to tell stories in an engaging way, even under pressure
  • Exceptional editing skills (FCPX, Adobe Premier or similar) and ability to quickly learn new ones, and experience of digital content management systems
  • Demonstrable experience and understanding of the news agenda in North America
  • Ability to adapt your journalism to the needs of different platforms and audience groups
  • Awareness of copyright issues and experience of tracking down footage and gaining permission to use
  • Knowledge of Adobe After Effects, Illustrator and Photoshop is a plus
