The Seattle Times, a family-owned news organization and one of the nation’s premier regional news sources, is hiring a Metro Editor to join our Pulitzer Prize-winning newsroom. This individual oversees and drives local news coverage in one of the nation’s most dynamic cities.
This position is one of the most critical in our newsroom, overseeing a large team of journalists. It requires someone with a strong mix of the following skills: thoughtful, decisive leadership; keen news judgment; a vision for coverage that yields vibrant conversation and results; a knack for multitasking; the ability to edit both fast-breaking news and in-depth projects; and a positive, team-building approach suited to a highly collaborative newsroom. The Metro Editor reports to the Assistant Managing Editor for Metro and News Initiatives.
The Seattle area’s rapid growth makes it a challenging and rewarding place for deep, sophisticated journalism. Gentrification, income disparity, race relations, and huge challenges such as the changing climate and traffic gridlock are just some of the issues we expose and explore. As the Metro Editor, you will be at the center of this coverage.
- Help set news priorities and guide planning for cross-team events, including breaking news, wildfires, elections and more.
- Provide leadership, administration and operational management of the Metro staff.
- Supervise editors who plan, assign, evaluate, select, edit and publish daily work.
- Oversee the Metro staff’s ongoing transformation into an audience focused digital operation.
- Provide oversight for the daily and Sunday local print sections, including representing Metro in morning and afternoon meetings.
- Meet regularly with direct reports to guide their performance and offer coaching. This includes conducting annual appraisals and assistance with onboarding new hires.
- Recruit and hire new reporters and editors, with an eye toward building a staff that represents the demographics of the larger community.
- Practice inclusive journalism every day.
- Collaborate with the community funded reporting labs and other departments in the newsroom including photo, design, graphics, business, sports, features. investigations and marketing.

- Experience: 8+ years’ experience at a metropolitan daily media organization, including 4 years of supervisory experience.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or a combination of education and experience.
- Passionate editor who sets a high standard for yourself and those around you.
- Proven skills with digital analytics.
- Ability to analyze stories and make quick, informed judgments about content, libel, accuracy, and newsworthiness under pressure and on deadline.
Schedule: This is largely a Monday-Friday position, with some night and weekend work as coverage requires. This position will also be hybrid, requiring a routine with some days in the office.
Compensation: The full salary range for this position is $89,900 to $127,000. We typically pay between $89,900 and $114,600, depending on experience and qualifications.
